Bar leaders urge mandatory service, reporting of hours; Florida lawyers divide over a rule that requires them to report pro bono hours; more law schools insist on public service
Article Abstract:
Calls for the private bar to help make up for the de-funding of the Legal Service Corp have grown louder. Some bar associations have even despaired of friendly persuasion and proposed mandatory pro bono. The Florida bar is trying to preserve a rule on mandatory pro bono, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York is advocating a similar program as well as support by the private bar for legal services providers. More law schools are requiring a certain amount of public service work for the J.D. degree.

Student initiative seeks data on law firms' social responsibility
Article Abstract:
New York University School of Law student Marc A Bonora believed that information about a law firm's social responsibility and its general work environment should go into a law student's employment decision and mailed a questionnaire seeking such information to the 1998 AmLaw 100 law firms. The survey's questions included information about workplace environment, ethnic diversity, charitable and political contributions, and commitment to pro bono work.

ABA tackles new Immigration Act; the ABA is taking a two-tiered approach to aiding immigrants who may be summarily deported or detained by agents of the INS
Article Abstract:
The ABA Immigration Pro Bono and Bar Activation Project distributes funds to local pro bono projects that provide legal services to immigrants and educates leading lawyers about these issues, with the hope of advocating for change. The ABA started this project in response to the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act's restrictions and has taken the position that the act's expedited removal provisions are unconstitutional.
