Beyond managerialism in criminal justice

Article Abstract:

The standard managerial style of criminal justice administration is being redefined as a governing institution rather than a service provider as public concerns shift towards an emphasis on the socio-economic aspects of crime. A closer relationship between social policy and criminal justice should arise as more attention is paid to crime prevention and early education. The post-managerial mentality in justice administration should focus more on long-term and community-oriented policies.

The imposition of conditions in bail decisions: from summary punishment to better behaviour on remand

Article Abstract:

A more thoughtful decision-making process regarding the setting of bail and more careful monitoring and enforcement of conditions attached to bail would contribute significantly to promoting better behavior on the part of defendants. Magistrates should be provided more information on the strategy of using conditions, and should appropriately match the bail conditions to the desired behavior. Furthermore, these decisions should be consistently enforced so defendants will comply.
