Bill Gates addresses legal community: Microsoft chairman predicts future of law office computing at annual ALA convention
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Chmn Bill Gates predicts that e-mail will replace faxing, that computers will see, hear and learn and that legal filings will be done electronically. Gates revealed these future visions to the legal profession via his keynote address to the Association of Legal Administrators' (ALA) 26th annual Educational Conference and Exposition in Seattle, WA on May 19, 1997. Gates also previewed Office 97 and various technologies that he believes will be adopted in the legal sector by the year 2002. He maintains that Microsoft's future legal product offerings are based on actual feedback that he receives from law firms. Gates claims that Word 97 exemplifies legal-specific enhancements such as a pleading wizard, paragraph numbering and integration with third-party legal packages including Docs Open and Lexis-Nexis. He also asserts that the Internet provides law firms with the optimal meeting tool for impromptu, casual, client questions that do not require face-to-face consultations.

The future of legal research?
Article Abstract:
West Group's KeyCite integrates the case law offered on Westlaw with case histories, citations to other decisions, and secondary materials tied to the company's Key Number System, which makes it easy to track the legal issues in a case. KeyCite includes all of the features of older Westmate applications, but offers improved graphical representations. KeyCite is an excellent research tool that identifies negative histories and offers the cite-checking capabilities of Insta-Cite and the currency of QuickCite. The software includes citations for Federal cases starting in 1754, although some states only offer citations to cases starting in 1945. KeyCite can be accessed through the Internet (www.keycite.com). Pricing for KeyCite depends on the contract the law firm has with Westlaw.
