Border crossing; responding to abductions that remove children from their home states
Article Abstract:
Parental kidnapping poses special legal challenges. Interstate parental kidnapping is governed by state law, and all states have adopted versions of the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Act, which helps determine whether the state a child has been abducted to has jurisdiction to modify an order issued by the child's home state. The Hague Convention comes into play when a child has been illegally taken out of the country. Congress has codified its terms in the International Child Abduction Remedies Act. The aggrieved parent should initiate proceedings through the US State Department.

Blimey, what's legal aid coming to? British Labor government wants to chip away at expensive tradition it began
Article Abstract:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Government has attracted much controversy with its plans to restrict access to legal aid by urging lawyers to accept more cases on a conditional, "no win, no fee" basis. Blair included these changes in a program of constitutional reform and they included, in addition to the conditional fee system, restricting legal aid for civil cases to those with a 75% chance of success, and not allowing its use to fund most claims for money.

Away from home; children caught in middle by parental moves
Article Abstract:
Special problems arise when a divorced custodial parent moves to a community distant enough that the noncustodial parent will have seriously diminished contact with the child. Legal recourse will depend on at what point in the divorce proceedings the move occurs, whether state law and/or the divorce judgment restricts the right to move and the parent's motivation for the move.
