Brand loyalty, entry, and price competition in pharmaceuticals after the 1984 Drug Act
Article Abstract:
The 1984 Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act succeeded in spreading competition among generic drugs to enable lower prices for consumers. A study of 18 products from 1984 to 1988 gives statistical support for the law's effectiveness, while showing that pricing strategies were not employed by the original product companies to hinder the success of generics. However, there have been revenue losses to companies with products in later stages of patent life.
