Bringing justice to the Wild East; reconstruction in the former GDR
Article Abstract:
Rebuilding the justice system of the five states which formerly comprised East Germany is proving to be a difficult challenge. Under communism, East German lawyers were the functionaries of the state rather than advocates in an independent judicial system. At the time of unification, they knew nothing about West German law. Legal problems since unification have included questions about land ownership in the Eastern states and the complexities of a Western legal system when compared to that under communism. Family law is an example of an area which is much more difficult now.

The mythical kingdom of lawyers; America doesn't have 70 percent of the earth's lawyers
Article Abstract:
Vice President Quayle's assertion that the US has 70% of the lawyers in the world depends on what statistics are used. Using UNESCO's Statistical Yearbook, the US had just 9.4% of the 7.3 million lawyers in the world in 1987. Qualifications to provide various levels of legal services vary so much from country to country that comparing numbers of lawyers in various countries is difficult. Statistical information is hard to find in most countries.

The new Europe: an economic giant is born
Article Abstract:
The implementation of the Single European Act (SEA) and the European Economic Area (EEA) present unique challenges for American law firms hoping to do business within the European Community (EC). EC lawyers need language proficiency and an understanding of the civil law under which most EC states operate. Trade issues will be politicized since EC trade law hardly deals with foreign trade.
