Commentary: a wider role for an enlarged European Union

Article Abstract:

Controversial issues are now being raised about the role of the European Union in Europe. It is clear that the European Union must establish broad strategic policy goals to support the future stability of Europe. The European Union is gradually becoming larger and more integrated. This process must continue, both for the European Union's own stake and as a way of boosting the prospects of European stability. Countries seeking to join the European Union must participate in a debate about the European Union's wider role.

Commentary: the new commission

Article Abstract:

The new European Commission has to be approved by the European Parliament in Sep 1999 and should then meet for the first time on Sep 22 1999. Romano Prodi has made a number of useful preparations such as reorganizing the departments of the Commission, establishing new codes of conduct, and redefining decision-making procedures. There is a need for faith to be renewed in the Commission which should work alongside the Parliament, though as separate bodies.
