Congress turns to violence as safety reps focus on stress and overwork
Article Abstract:
The 1996 Trade Union Congress (TUC) focused on job stress and its relationship to workplace violence. A TUC survey indicates nearly 70% of safety reps say stress is the biggest work health issue. Public sector stress levels are higher than found in the private sector; overwork, performance pay, harassment, and layoffs are among the factors contributing to stress. The Congress featured speakers from the teacher unions and the health service and banking industries who discussed violence in their respective workplaces.

Fear of violence over new allowance leads to strike action by benefit staff
Article Abstract:
Benefits Agency staffers in Leicestershire, UK, staged a strike to demand better security protection in administering the means-tested Jobseeker's Allowance benefits. A risk assessment of the offices had concluded that the screens were unnecessary. Employment Service Agency statistics present an unclear picture of the extent and causes of violent encounters.
