Consultation on disability regulations
Article Abstract:
UK lawmakers are considering Disability Discrimination Act 1995 regulations defining excluded conditions and governing employment situations. The proposed regulations allow certain types of justifiable job discrimination, although employers must make reasonable adjustments for their disabled workers. Drafts of a Code of Practice on the elimination of employment discrimination and guidance on disability definition are also being considered.

Consultation on "check-off."(deduction of trade union subscriptions from pay checks)
Article Abstract:
The Department of Trade and Industry's consultation paper about removing the statutory requirement of getting reauthorization for deducting union subscriptions has been distributed to interested groups. If the clause is removed employers will get a written authorization once and employees can decide against this check-off at any time. The expected Labor Government white paper on union recognition is likely to be issued early in 1998.

New regulations on health and safety consultation
Article Abstract:
UK employers are obligated to conduct health and safety consultations with employees or their representatives, under regulations effective Oct 1, 1996. The consultation regulations cover required subject matter, consultation mechanism, information to be provided, and the representatives' roles in this process. Representatives' training, safety, support, and paid time off are also covered.
