Consumer lawyers innovate; new breed of suits brings results, big fees
Article Abstract:
There has been a comeback of consumer litigation following the pro-business 1980s. Much of this litigation is taking place by class action since this specialty has been hard to make a living on after the weakening of consumer protection laws. Poor people with consumer complaints are finding it hard to get their day in court since cutbacks in Legal Aid have forced their attorneys to focus on other kinds of cases. Plaintiffs' attorneys place some blame on the deregulatory Reagan era for the resurgence of this litigation.

Rent-to-own is targeted as racketeering
Article Abstract:
A class action has been filed against Rent-A-Center Inc, the largest US chain of rent-to-own businesses, for engaging in deceptive trade practices. The rent-to-own industry has long been charged with combining usurious interest rates with charges for merchandise far above their retail value. So far plaintiffs have been unsuccessful in getting rent-to-own transactions classified as installment sales in order to have them considered under consumer credit laws.

Animal abuse targeted; novel Oregon effort brings together prosecutors, animal protection groups
Article Abstract:
Attorneys from Oregon-based animal welfare organizations have volunteered for the first program in the nation to prosecute animal abuse cases. Pamela Frasch, director of the Animal Legal Defense Fund's Anti-Cruelty Division and originator of the program, points out that society should take this type of cruelty seriously because animals suffer just like humans and because of the connection between animal abuse and violent crimes against humans.
