Corporate charity: no more business as usual
Article Abstract:
Former general Colin L. Powell is trying to influence corporations to engage in charitable works to solve society's social problems. However, these efforts may be ineffective considering that today's corporate leaders such as General Electric Co Chmn John F. Welch and Microsoft Corp's Bill Gates treat charitable donations as nonessential costs. The focus of most companies is to avoid takeovers and cope with increased competition due to globalization by cutting as much cost as possible including donations. Charitable works are done only in few places such as in Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Industry-sponsored research: secrecy versus corporate responsibility
Article Abstract:
Research sponsored by corporations often involves contracts that participating researchers must sign and that give the sponsor control over information. Claiming ownership of copyrights and patents is not the only way in which companies limit what can be done. They also may claim as intellectual property tools, resources, and techniques used in the work and data that emerges. Companies should be allowed restrictions that enable them to enjoy return on investment, but should not restrict flow of information that would contribute to the public good.
