Counsel puts her stamp on business

Article Abstract:

Sarah Moss, the vice pres and general counsel of Pitney Bowes Inc, which makes a range of business equipment and provides business services, directs a headquarters department organized primarily by business unit and made up of 40 lawyers, 30 of whom report to her. The in-house department handles most basic corporate transactions and intellectual property matters, while outside counsel perform acquisitions and litigation. Since arriving at the company in 1996, Moss has added Williams and Connolly, Venable Baetjer and Howard Darby to the outside counsel list.

Article Abstract:

Howard J Rudge, the senior vice pres and general counsel of E I Du Pont de Nemours & Co, has a department of 245 attorneys, of which 129 work at company headquarters. For outside counsel, the company has what it calls a 'primary supplier network' of 34 firms. Rudge strives, however, for a seamless relationship between departmental and outside counsel. Du Pont has 1997 revenues of $45 bil and a net income of $2.5 bil. Its employees number 98,000 in countries worldwide.
