Crash course for business; companies can be liable for accidents resulting from job-related cell phone use

Article Abstract:

Statistics indicate cellular telephone use has been a factor in many traffic accidents, and the personal injury case-tracking of Jury Verdict Research reports 34 recorded incidents since 1990 in which use of these telephones has contributed to accidents and injuries. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration agreed that statistics show an increased likelihood of accidents, but maintained cell telephone use cannot yet be separated from other distractions while driving.

The price is wrong; the chief justice declines an offer of free Lexis research

Article Abstract:

US Supreme Court chief justice William H Rehnquist turned down a Lexis-Nexis offer of free legal research out of a concern for appearances. Lexis-Nexis had lost out to the West Group when the Administrative Office of the US Courts gave the latter an exclusive contract in a 1995 competitive bid. The courts had been using both services for a decade before that, and Lexis made its unprecedented offer to make sure it remains important in the lucrative legal research market.
