Day Berry's gender gap; women say firm's old-boy network stifles promotion
Article Abstract:
Connecticut's Day, Berry and Howard employs almost exclusively male attorneys and has a poor record of promoting women to partnership, prompting a concern in the legal community that the firm is guilty of sexism. According to data collected for the 1996 National Law Journal survey of the 250 largest US law firms, only 9% of Day Berry partners are women. At latest count the firm employs 84 partners, of which only 6 are women. The firm recognizes that there is a problem and states it intends to offer better mentoring and training to all associates.

Things are looking up - if you're already in: right now, it's the lateral market that's jumping; it's harder for new graduates
Article Abstract:
Employment prospects are better for lateral hires than for new law school graduates. The trend towards hiring more laterals and fewer entry-level lawyers holds true across the country. Law firms use laterals to strengthen practice groups and such hiring has dramatically influenced firm structure and summer programs. Job opportunities for temporary and contract attorneys have also shown substantial growth. Perhaps the global nature of legal practice is the reason attorney job opportunities do not seem to depend on regional demographics.

It is important to detail the consultant's authority in presenting the partner to potential firms.
