S.T. Jack Brigham, the senior vice president-corporate affiars and general counsel of the Hewlett-Packard Co, has a department of 195 attorneys handling all aspects of the company's legal business. The outside counsel handle litigation, although the company stays very much involved. Hewlett-Packard is trying to increase the amount of intellectual property work done in-house and has managed to increase this from 20% to 50%. ENCAD Inc, a manufacturer of large-format ink-jet printers, has unfair competition charges pending against H-P.

A lawyer for the Linux business

Article Abstract:

David G. Schumannfang, the counsel and secretary of Red Hat Software Inc, developer and provider of the open-source Linux-based operating system software and of a CD-ROM Linux package, is the sole in-house lawyer of a company with 200 employees. Red Hat has formed alliances with many key figures in the computer and Internet industries, a number of which offer Linux-compatible products.
