Doing good; how one law firm started a low-fee branch office to help those in need
Article Abstract:
Richmond, VA's Hunton and Williams decided to devote their pro bono commitment to starting a legal aid program for the working poor, those ranging from the top of the legal aid eligibility range to a figure twice that sum. The office opened in Jun 1990 and decided to concentrate on family law, guardianship cases and housing law. Clients were charged $50 for each case undertaken. Staffing was set at 10 volunteer lawyers with a commitment of 1000 hours yearly requested. Staffing has grown and this part of the firm's work is expected to continue indefinitely.

A Georgia law firm's offer of free indigent criminal defense to clients signing contracts for self-improvement courses ranging from job skills training to drug counseling. Each of the project's lawyers accepts no more than 15 clients at a time, while a public defender might have to shoulder as many as 60.

Taking bullies at their words; proof of extreme verbal abuse can be used to bolster self-defense claim
Article Abstract:
A 1999 Georgia Supreme Court ruling that evidence of the effects of psychological abuse may be relevant to a self-defense claim is discussed. Nguyen v. State recognized that a pattern of psychological abuse had relevance for an individual's perception of imminent physical danger.
