Economic and monetary union
Article Abstract:
The specifications of two of the new euro coins have been changed to assist the blind and partially sighted, and to avoid fraudulent use. Retailers in the euro zones can display a logo to show that they operate in euros and they will be expected to follow the principles of good practice. Member states have to submit their stability or convergence programmes showing their budgetary position and economic policies by the end of the year. The European Parliament is considering the European Central Bank reserves and it has been asserted that such high levels of reserves would not be required with more internal trade within the euro zone.

Critical issue: EU enlargement
Article Abstract:
The European Union is likely to be enlarged by up to ten countries from east and central Europe in the early-21st century, which will substantially affect business within the EU, as well as its economic, political and institutional dealings. None of the candidate countries have reached the required criteria for entry, however, with Slovakia specifically disqualified due to its lack of democracy. Candidate countries must be able to meet membership obligations, must have a functioning market economy and must be democratic. The existing EU institutions must also be adapted to encompass new members.

EU entry talks: The eye of the needle
Article Abstract:
Prospective EU members are expected to apply the full acquis communautaire, although some exceptions must necessarily be granted as public administrations and private companies adjust to membership conditions. Such exceptions are usually only temporary or transitional. The EU has launched negotiations that will eventually result in the admission of Estonia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Cyprus, and Slovenia.
