Employment references in California after Randi W. v. Muroc Joint Unified School District: a proposal for legislation to promote responsible employment reference practices
Article Abstract:
The Cal Supreme Court's 1997 Muroc decision held that positive job references given on behalf of a potentially dangerous ex-employee can make an ex-employer negligent for the person's injurious acts committed while working for a subsequent employer. Job references in the post-Muroc era are likely to be marked by excessive and potentially unfair negative disclosures about former employees and could even lead companies to abandon the practice of providing references. State laws should be adopted in order to promote free and proper dissemination of job references.

Fines fit for crimes as Ramsgate penalties send records tumbling
Article Abstract:
A UK court has assessed record fines totalling 2.5 mil pounds sterling against the four principals responsible for the Port of Ramsgate ferry passenger walkway that collapsed in 1994. Lloyd's Register and Swedish firms FEAB and FKAB were found guilty of gross negligence for their roles in the defective design of the walkway. Port Ramsgate received lower fines and, while guilty, was found to have a lower degree of culpability.
