Excessive fees bite back: two state courts dock lawyers who cared more about cash than clients

Article Abstract:

Tennessee and Ohio supreme courts have punished lawyers who pursued excessive fees from their clients. In Tennessee, all fees were taken away from a lawyer who appealed a lower court's award which he considered inadequate. In Ohio, a lawyer was suspended for seeking high fees from a dead person's estate, a clear ethical violation.

Shifting winds; court whittles away at plaintiffs' recovery of attorney fees

Article Abstract:

The recovery of attorneys' fees in civil rights cases after the US Supreme Court's 2001 ruling in Buckhannon Board & Care Home v. West Virginia is discussed. Buckhannon ruled that the prevailing party ruled that the prevailing party could only recover fees if the court awarded some affirmative relief.

Law in the oval office; ABA museum to highlight the historical impact of attorney-presidents

Article Abstract:

Plans for an ABA Museum of Law focusing on the 24 presidents who have also been attorneys are discussed. The museum will include displays of artifacts and memorabilia focusing on the role these men played in private law practice, as government attorneys, and judges.
