Extensible markup language (XML) is the next step beyond hypertext markup language (HTML) and will soon provide access to the meaning of Web content rather than just its appearance as is the case with HTML. General business XML applications include browsers and development tools, search and retrieval, document and litigation support, electronic filing, document assembly and word processing. XML will affect every part of the legal technology world, offering benefits to attorneys at all levels of technological competence.
