Getting to the Rock's summit; S & C's Joseph Shenker turned over the keys to Rockefeller Center

Article Abstract:

All sides praise Sullivan & Cromwell partner Joseph C Shenker's work in negotiating the takeover of NYC's Rockefeller Center by Goldman Sachs & Co. The transaction remains fiercely disputed, however, with losing bidders claiming Goldman won thanks to legal jockeying over loans it made to the real estate investment trust (REIT) that controls the center. The REIT may have agreed to Goldman's bid to avoid litigation over the loans, even though the offer of $8 per share was les favorable in some ways than competing offers.

More lawsuits dogging Hunton; investors demand millions lost in alleged banking scheme involving ex-partner; firm denies it knew

Article Abstract:

Defrauded investors across the US are suing Hunton and Williams and its vanished former partner Scott J. McKay Wolas, alleging they lost millions of dollars in investment schemes gone bad. The scheme promised to leverage investors' money for bank debentures from key Western European banks obtained at wholesale prices and resold repeatedly for resale prices. The profits were estimated at about $80 mil for an investment of $500,000. Hunton alleges it knew nothing of Wolas' fraudulent activities.

Baker drops N.Y. AIDS appeal: firm settles $500,000 award to estate of lawyer it fired

Article Abstract:

Baker and McKenzie has dropped its appeal of a New York Supreme Court decision ordering the firm to pay Geoffrey F. Bower $500,000 in damages for firing him after he contracted AIDS. Bowers' family and the firm have negotiated a settlement requiring both sides to refrain from discussing the case. The firm's silence on the issue may not help its status at some law schools, where it has been banned from recruiting because of its treatment of Bowers.
