Charting the future here and now; a business plan helps keep your practice on the course you set

Article Abstract:

Sole and small-firm practitioners will find a business plan particularly useful, as they often find themselves coping with problems by the seat of their pants, without considering how their actions affect their practices. A lawyer should commit a business plan to writing before starting a practice, and a five-to 10-year plan for the practice should be given. Key elements for this plan are the type of clientele and cases desired and economic forecasts. Writing a plan down forces a lawyer to evaluate for realism.
