Ellen Kaden, the executive vice pres, general counsel and secretary of CBS Inc., heads a department of about 40 lawyers on both coasts. There were some attorney layoffs after the merger of CBS with Westinghouse Electric Corp which occurred in 1945. Kaden received an M.A. in American history and graduated from the Columbia University School of Law, where she was a law review member. Prior to employment by CBS, she worked at New York's Cravath, Swaine and Moore. She described accessibility and the ability to motivate people as important for a manager.
