He fields baseball's hardest line drives

Thomas J. Ostertag has a position enviable to many sports fans, that of general counsel in the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball. The office has 70 employees, while there are three attorneys in the commissioner's office. Major League Baseball Properties, handling trademarks, has four more attorneys. There is a variety of litigation and much of it has to go to outside counsel. Extensive guidelines for such counsel exist and are scrupulously enforced. Ostertag's charitable activity is the Baseball Assistance Team, which helps needy former players.

He guards the gold; as banker and regulator, Ernest Patrikis has a big say in banking's future

Ernest Patrikis's promotion to first vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York marks his ascension as one of the nation's top banking lawyers to one of the most powerful banking law positions. A 27-year veteran of the bank, Patrikis is known as much for his outspoken and often abrasive nature as for his enormous ability and his capacity for 14-hour days. The new position will give him more exposure to and control over monetary policy and is welcomed by those who think the Fed needs more regulatory expertise.

Hershey Corp VP Robert M. Reese manages an in-house group of 10 lawyers as part of duties as general counsel and corporate secretary. He also oversees the company's outside counsel. He has implemented an evaluation system for handling both in-house attorneys and outside firms. His grandfather owned the Reese's candy company, which was bought by Hershey's in the 1960s. Reese's hobbies, education, and family background, and the charity work of the Milton Hershey School, are also discussed.
