Article Abstract:
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, in Prosecutor v. Akayesu, convicted Jean-Paul Akayesu of genocide, incitement to genocide, and crimes against humanity. Akayesu, a member of the Hutu ethnic group and a mayor in Rwanda in 1994, was accused of ordering and taking part in atrocities against another ethnic group, the Tutsi. In convicting Akayesu, the Tribunal broadened the concept of genocide. The Tribunal also accepted rape and sexual violence as crimes against humanity.
