The European Union revealed its five-year strategy for the internal market in October 1999. The strategy focuses on effective implementation of market rules and adjustment to new developments, such as electronic commerce. The main objectives of the plan are to improve the business environment; to improve citizens' quality of life; to contribute towards the world marketplace and to encourage dynamic economic and jobs markets.
