Is pay equity equitable? A perspective that looks beyond pay

Article Abstract:

Writings on pay equity overemphasize the disparity between men's and women's wages and fail to take into account all the variables which go into the determination of compensation. Work rewards extend to matters other than pay, including fringe benefits, social satisfaction, and recognition by the supervisor. Comparable worth research has not given enough weight to these nonfinancial, intrinsic rewards of work. A more effective way than the pay equity analysis of reducing disparities between men's and women's compensation would be emphasizing non-traditional job opportunities for women as well as making women more aware of their market power.

Homosexuals in public service: a new suspect class?

Article Abstract:

Recent litigation attempts to remedy discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in public employment have been rejected by the lower courts. Cases such as Ben-Shalom v Marsh and High Tech Gays v Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office have challenged the Supreme Court's ruling in Bowers v Hardwick, which stated that there is no constitutional right to privacy protecting homosexuality. The courts have upheld government regulations by applying rational-basis review, while gay groups have argued for a heightened scrutiny level of review.
