Large layoffs of librarians not seen yet; Baker & McKenzie's outsourcing of library staff hasn't triggered a trend, but several smaller firms say such a move is prudent

Article Abstract:

Baker & McKenzie may have laid off its library staff and this action may have spurred the American Ass'n of Law Libraries (AALL) to form a Task Force on the Value of Law Libraries in the Information Age but the layoff does not seem to have started a national trend. One advantage of outsourcing is the ease of replacing a librarian if the one first hired is not a good fit. With outsourcing the librarian is also never absent. Baker & McKenzie's action has made the profession mindful of their job security in the face of automated legal research.
