Lawyer of the year: Johnnie L. Cochran Jr.: a no-holds-barred victory
Article Abstract:
Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. is the lawyer of the year for his victory in the all-but-impossible O.J. Simpson case and for the issues he helped bring to the forefront of national debate. Long considered impossible to dislike, his high-profile use of racism has finally made him unwelcome in some Los Angeles legal circles, while provoking thought on race relations and police abuse of minorities. He remains oblivious to the symbolism and implications of the events he orchestrated. Lawrence R. Velvel and Bruce Bennett are runners-up.

His reach knows no bounds
Article Abstract:
Kenneth W Starr's main work as an independent counsel investigating President Clinton and related issues has expanded beyond any prior such investigations, while his work on the side gave him the sort of year that any lawyer could envy. His independent counsel work covers the Whitewater land deal, the administration's acquisition of FBI files, the White House travel office scandal, Hillary Rodham Clinton's billing, and more. His other work had him before state and US supreme courts arguing the day's leading issues.
