Mandatory overtime and quality of life in the 1990s
Article Abstract:
Legislation is needed to protect workers from mandatory overtime, a practice that has a negative impact on quality of life. The relief provided by the current regimes of at-will employment, collective bargaining and unemployment insurance are insufficient to remedy the undesirable consequences of mandatory overtime. Possible legislative measures include an increase in the overtime premium, a change in the tax structure to discourage use of mandatory overtime, an outright ban, limits on the number of overtime hours, and requirements for advance notice.
