'Miranda' now on the endangered species list
Article Abstract:
The appeals court decision in Dickerson v. United States letting 18 USC 3501 govern criminal defendants' confessions rather than the Miranda rule was an ill-advised piece of judicial activism. The United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit made this ruling, and for an appellate court to suspend a landmark Supreme Court case reaffirmed by recent Supreme Court cases is virtually unprecedented. In federal prosecutions, according to Sec. 3501, a confession given "voluntarily" can be admitted and non-compliance with Miranda does not establish lack of voluntariness.

Liberty interest in aided suicide rejected; Court finds no constitutionally protected interest, distinguishes the withdrawal of life support
Article Abstract:
Assisted suicide is not a constitutionally protected right according to the US Supreme Court's unanimous decisions in the Vacco and Glucksberg cases. The court was able to distinguish between life-support withdrawal and doctor-assisted suicide. The court's decision was based on the state's dual interests in handling suicide as a public health problem and in preserving life, the vulnerability of the aged and poor, the possibility that involuntary euthanasia would become a supportable position, and the fundamental role of doctors as healers.
