New Microsoft tool is effective - and free!
Article Abstract:
Microsoft's NetMeeting 2.0 videoconferencing application provides attorneys with a free, reliable desktop collaboration and productivity tool. NetMeeting enables real-time electronic collaboration over the Internet, traditional telephone lines or LANs. The application is available for free download on Microsoft's Web site and it accommodates both audio and video conferencing. Attorneys will find NetMeeting's simultaneous document editing and review by multiple remote users especially valuable. NetMeeting consists of audio/visual and application/data collaboration components. Although NetMeeting allows for application collaboration even if a participant's machine lacks a camera and microphone, the audio/visual component requires that both participants have the necessary hardware. NetMeeting's convenient shared white boards, simple file exchanges and chat alternatives make it excellent for training and meetings.

Putting the Web to work
Article Abstract:
Inmagic's $5,000 DB/Text WebServer DBMS is an appropriate tool for lawyers interested in capitalizing on an intranet's power by placing information in databases that can be queried. DB/Text WebServer features integrated image management that is optimized for text use. It is an add-on to DB/TextWorks which accepts standard Web browser queries and creates forms that allow users to access data via browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Law firms can use WebServer and TextWorks to develop queries of TextWorks databases using WebServer forms. They can also retrieve reports with its Web browser. WebServer is incompatible with Novell environments and requires NT Server and Microsoft's Internet Information Server. WebServer's simplicity makes it a viable alternative for facilitating database information sharing.

Buying your first litigation support program
Article Abstract:
Ten important factors should be considered when selecting litigation support software for the first time or when replacing an older system. The first criteria is extensive search capabilities and features, including Boolean queries, wildcard searching, and the potential to specify range and proximity in searches. Advanced formatting functions, good retrieval options and flexible data loading functions are also important selection criteria. Ideally, the package should be easy to use, compatible with many database file types and portable for field and courtroom use. Stable software with a proven track record is desirable, as is any package with the capability of handling full-text and data formatted with fields.
