'Niche' firms can target other firms; many law firms with specialized areas of expertise could benefit from approaching noncompeting firms as potential clients

Article Abstract:

Law firms with unique specialties should include fellow law firms in their client development activities. These activities cannot rely on success in litigation and community activities to convey their value. Advertising should also target law students and lawyers at noncompeting firms. Brief summaries of a firm's successes, media prominence, editorial mentions in prominent law reviews, and controlled messages in advertising all help. Additional activities which can be used to target law students include Internet presence and pro bono service.

Pacesetting firms reveal erratic by client need or new practice development; expansion was driven by client need or new practice development

Article Abstract:

The 20th Annual National Law Journal survey of the 250 largest US law firms shows growth by almost three-quarters of the firms on the list. Growth patterns vary and are sometimes client-driven but in some cases entrepreneurial. In the former case, the growth is steadier. Intellectual property is the specialty most likely to drive entrepreneurial growth. Palo Alto, CA's Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati and Boston, MA's Testa, Hurwitz and Thibeault are examples.

Firms need to back up consultants; the key to obtaining the best work from outside consultants is to furnish them with the support they need to perform the job

Article Abstract:

Law firms who retain consultants are looking for expertise and an unbiased view of the firm's problems. The law firm should remember, however, that clients who do their share and provide consultants with needed support and resources will get the best results. Good clients also are candid about a firm's strengths and weaknesses and give consultants feedback about their work.
