Noisy hypocrisy and moments of silence
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has correctly struck down both required prayer in public schools and 'moments of silence' set aside for personal prayer. By the same logic it should find invalid laws mandating more general 'moments of silence' because they are merely charades posed by religious elements that serve no other apparent purpose than to further sanctioned religious practice in public schools. The current political climate shows many politicians calling out for such silent moments, if not for constitutional amendments, increasing the courts' burden.

Political demagoguery threatens judiciary
Article Abstract:
Politically motivated attacks on the independent judiciary threaten freedom and the constitutional principles of the US. Critics of Judge Harold Baer Jr hail from across the political spectrum, but all are demagogues in the tradition of totalitarians throughout history. The routine skepticism that greets the notion of independent judges, flaunted daily by journalists and others, deserves attack from members of the bar. Fortunately the nonpartisan nature of recent hysteria should make it easier to abandon that course.

The bar must campaign for the independence of the judiciary - and of the legal profession itself
Article Abstract:
Sopme political candidates seek to make the judicial branch subservient, and this along with public inattention and lack of knowledge of the source of judges' authority and what judges do makes the judicial branch susceptible to the drastic changes some propose. These proposals include a constitutional amendment to provide terms of office for federal judges, who would then be reappointed by vote of the Senate. This would end the system of three independent and equal branches of government.
