Nonprofit-to-industry technology transfers grow; agreements licensing research from nonprofits to companies must be clear, comprehensive
Article Abstract:
The academic research-and-development sector, with institutes such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and various US universities, has made significant strides in technology transfer. Sales of products developed from inventions transferred from the university research centers posted 1996 income totalling $20.6 bil. In 1996, US universities, research institutes and hospitals had about $500 mil in gross license income. Issues for such nonprofits to consider in successfully negotiating with industry are listed.

Start-up companies must have comprehensive patent portfolios if interested in the establishment of a preferred market position. After all, the competition will try to do the same thing at such a company's expense. Companies must capitalize on their intellectual property potential in view of the market's increasing recognition of intellectual property as a strategic asset.
