Noriega: were the previews more lively?

Article Abstract:

The drug trafficking trial of former Panamanian dictator Manuel Antonio Noriega has not lived up to its political expectations. Instead of explosive revelations about Iran-Contra and George Bush, the trial has been a standard drug-trafficking case. While this has been a victory for the prosecution, the witnesses against Noriega, mostly drug traffickers, have credibility problems. Noriega's defense has been able to show that the Drug Enforcement Agency did obtain help from the Noriega government in anti-drug efforts. The possibility of Noriega testifying may introduce the drama many observers expected, but have not found in this trial.

Raveling the web of BCCI

Article Abstract:

The Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) cases continue to result in allegations of fraud and money-laundering. It is believed that General Manuel Antonio Noriega used the bank to launder money and loot the Panamanian treasury. Jordanian arms dealer and coffee smuggler Munther Bilbeisi was another client. At one time the bank had $20 billion in assets. BCCI was shut down worldwide last July after being accused by the Bank of England of massive fraud. It has now filed for bankruptcy protection and forfeited $550 million to the U.S. government.

Falling rates threaten IOLTA

Article Abstract:

Many IOLTA programs are enduring cash shortages in view of the low interest rates prevalent in the early 1990s. This situation threatens the availability of legal assistance to the poor and is forcing IOLTA managers to seek alternate funding methods. Most of the state programs surveyed reported decreased revenues, blaming both lower interest rates and the recession.
