Off-the-shelf Mac solution
Article Abstract:
Now Software's Now Contact for Macintosh 3.5 and Now Up-to-Date for Macintosh 3.5 workgroup software make it easy to accumulate and organize the information. The most striking feature of both is the addition of the QuickPad, which allows users to add information without opening the programs. Users set up a hot key to initiate QuickPad, then enter the data in the 'title area.' QuickPad's intelligent functions allow it to correlate words in the title area with data stored in contact lists, then place a prompt for the telephone call in the calendar and associate the event with the correct entry in the database. QuickPad uses key words to initiate events such as scheduling appointments, telephone calls or faxes, but users cannot expend the list of key words. Contact's Notes field allows users to enter data quickly, then drag it to the database, while Up-to-Date allows resorting of the to-do list. The programs cost $149 when bought together.

Scanning accuracy for the Mac
Article Abstract:
The Macintosh version of Caere's OmniPage Pro 6.0 OCR software is now much faster and accurate than before. Like the Windows version, it is easy to use in all areas. Its Quadratic Neural Network significantly improves accuracy, even in poorly-defined originals. The Language Analyst facility helps the system evaluate difficult words through a body of linguistic information. The Power Mac native program is lightning fast, and the final product can retain the original formatting of the paper document. If an error occurs, users can look at the bitmap of the suspect word, and OmniPage will also suggest replacements. The recognition process can be fully automated, with output saved in a word processing file for easy editing.
