Pay prospects for 1996/97 - a survey of the private sector

Most private sector UK employers expect wage settlements to be somewhat lower in 1997, with settlements expected to average 3% to 3.99%. The median increase is expected to be 3.5%, close to the 1996 median. Pay increases will be influenced by company performance, inflation, and prevailing industry wages. Likely upward and downward pay pressure, benefit changes, and reward practices are also discussed.

Economic forecasters believe the UK economy will grow in 1997, with average earnings growth possibly reaching 4.9% by year's end. Forecasters also believe unemployment will continue to decline, unit wage costs will drop, and headline inflation will rise to 2.4% from 2.1%. In an election year, stronger consumer-driven growth is expected amid a tighter labor market and relatively stable inflation.

The UK economic outlook for the year 1995-1996 is one of stable moderate growth. Pay settlements and average earnings will begin to rise after having remained steady during the previous year, possibly averaging 5% by Dec 1996. Headline inflation is expected to drop to around 3% from 3.9%. Unit wage costs are predicted to rise and employment numbers are expected to drop during 1996.
