Playing a game of ecological chicken

Article Abstract:

Wampler Foods in Moorefield, WV, has been tagged as the main agent of pollution of the Potomac River. The 155,000 tons of poultry litter produced annually in Wampler, from the slaughter of 90 million chickens, goes to the headwaters of Potomac River. The American Rivers environmental group has included Potomac in its list of endangered rivers since it has become unsafe for swimming. The drinking water of 2.5 million residents within the area is also being threatened. The lack of government fund for monitoring area streams prevents the early resolution of the Potomac River problem.

The slumlord shell game: alternative financing fuels the real estate market in the nation's inner cities

Article Abstract:

Balloon mortgage deals play a major role in the propagation of slums in many areas. A person buys a building with a high interest loan from a private financier, then the financier sales the loan, or forecloses on the property as inflated values make it impossible for the original purchaser to make payments. This cycle repeats itself as each new investor eventually defaults. Meanwhile, no one spends any money on building upkeep, and housing conditions worsen. The experience of Mount Wilson Reality and other New York city slumlords is discussed.

The Port Authority shell game

Article Abstract:

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA) should be dedicating much of its $2.7 billion annual budget to improving its infrastructure, but this is deteriorating while millions of dollars yearly go to political patronage and poorly thought out real estate deals. The PA derives much of its revenue from tolls on users of tunnels and bridges connecting New York and New Jersey. Although the PA claims to be operating this commuting system at a loss, this is arrived at by creative accounting and in reality there is a profit.
