Politics is threatening the federal judiciary
Article Abstract:
Recent events reveal congressional encroachment on the federal judiciary's independence and co-equal status, and could give life to Pat Buchanan's vision of a vastly more limited judiciary. Action now can forestall worse problems, but already Congress has refused judges a raise for three years and is unlikely to approve an increase before 2002, because Congress members will not vote themselves a raise. Further, congressional measures denigrate the judiciary's capacity for self-management, and direct inquiries by members of Congress constitute intimidation.

Public should judge judges' worth
Article Abstract:
Presidential candidate Bob Dole feels that the judicial system no longer assures each American's security the way it used to. Dole would not appoint judges interested in judicial activism, but rather judges who respect the original intent of the Constitution. Dole would also constrain the federal government and respect the rights of the states. He would institute an annual report summarizing judicial decisions and a nonpartisan Judicial Integrity Panel.

Judges must be judged periodically
Article Abstract:
The life appointment of federal judges should be amended by Congress to allow voters to periodically register 'continued confidence' or 'no confidence' in individual judges. The vote would be purely advisory, but ideally judges receiving no-confidence votes would voluntarily step down. Such a measure would increase public confidence in the judicial system.
