Public sector employment
Article Abstract:
UK public employees are covered by employment laws similar to those protecting private employees. The Crown maintains at-will dismissal powers, but most employment rights of Crown servants are protected. However, the overall employment status of Crown servants, Parliament employees, and the police remains somewhat ambiguous. Employment contracts cover teachers, local authority staff, and National Health Service staff, while military personnel are considered to be Crown servants with appropriate employment protections. Judicial review is available to some employees. EC Directives protect many public sector workers in member states.
