Putting a price on life and death
Article Abstract:
The effect of deregulation on workplace health and safety laws was the subtext of a Netherlands cost-benefit assessment (CBA) conference. The UK government has pushed aggressively for CBA measures in a distinct contrast to general thrust of EC labor safety legislation. The CBA approach attempts to balance the economic costs of safety measures against the overall risks involved. The issue is sometimes viewed as placing an economic value on the potential financial gains to be realized in risking workers' safety.

UK praised for manual handling efforts as most member states do the minimum
Article Abstract:
EU member states generally have met only the minimum requirements in establishing guidance on manual handling. Several states merely adopted the EC Directive on maximum weight, risk reduction, and load restrictions as originally written, although the UK has been praised for its efforts in creating workable guidelines. The European Trade Union Technical Bureau for Health and Safety has criticized the guidelines adopted by most of the other member states.
