Rising inflation casts shadow over pay talks
Article Abstract:
A provisional analysis of the Industrial Relations Services' pay databank, which is based on 87 pay reviews of nearly 650,000 employees, indicates that pay awards have been 3% in the whole economy for the third month in a row. Settlements are half a percentage point higher than Mar 1994 and at their highest level since Mar 1993. Of the pay reviews that happened in the three months until Jan 1995, 75% were higher increases compared to the reviews of Jan 1994. The top quartile of the settlements were 3.5% or more and the bottom quartile were 2.5% or less. The median level of private sector pay reviews was 3%.
