SCOLA means quality assistants
Article Abstract:
The ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistants (SCOLA) ensures quality education for that profession by developing and applying standards for accreditation of their formal educational programs. Programs must, to be eligible for ABA approval, have operated for a specified time, graduated students and satisfied all requirements of the ABA Guidelines. Reviews of approved legal assistant programs to ensure continued compliance with the guidelines take place every seven years. There are 217 ABA-approved legal assistant education programs across the US.

Lowering the bar; new Restatement on lawyer competence may protect less skillful lawyers
Article Abstract:
An American Law Institute (ALI) Restatement proposes a much lower bar for lawyer competence than that contained in the ABA Rules of Professional Conduct and may protect those members of the profession who are less skillful. In civil litigation, violations of the ABA rules do not cause liability, while violation of the standard of care contained in the Restatement is a basis for liability.

No: another roadblock
Article Abstract:
Mandatory licensing for paralegals would restrain competition by limiting the number of people entering the profession and increase the cost of legal services by passing on to consumers the increased costs of entering the paralegal profession. The legal and medical malpractice suits filed each year prove that licensing does not keep incompetent people out of a profession.
