Calif. law is redefining sexual harassment claims: applicable beyond employees, it lets users and providers of 'professional services' sue over unwanted advances
Article Abstract:
A California statute that took effect on Jan 1, 1995 greatly broadens the reach of sexual harassment claims beyond the employer-employee relationship. It is aimed specifically at professionals, including doctors, lawyers, and teachers, and it could lead to even broader laws in CA or elsewhere. A plaintiff must show that he or she asked the defendant to stop the harassment, that ending the professional relationship would have led to hardship, and that he or she suffered personal injury or economic loss.
