Shopper's guide to litigation support
Article Abstract:
The features, capabilities, system requirements and contact information for 34 litigation support applications from 18 vendors are compared. Litigation support software features typically include full-text searching, database capabilities and indexing, imaging, trial notebook features, issue analysis and substantial law, real-time transcript access, print tools, case management features, secure Internet transactions and groupware capabilities. When selecting a litigation support product, users are advised to learn what to expect from such applications and to decide whether to take an enterprise approach. The relationship with the vendor is important and a long-range plan for implementation is necessary. Training is a vital element in a successful implementation.

Do-it-yourself litigation support
Article Abstract:
Off-the-shelf database applications can be useful in handling litigation. These products are not specifically designed for the legal profession, but offer powerful tools for attorneys. Database products are as easy to use as word processors and they all employ similar approaches to creating and using databases. Database programs specifically designed for legal use are available and offer special features not available on typical database systems. Some of the capabilities of a database that lawyers will find useful include lists for tracking items in case files and communicating information with others, a list of discovery from the opposing party, court exhibit lists and lists of physical evidence in storage.
