Article Abstract:

There are still differing views within the European Union about social policy, even though the tension which existed between the European Union and the UK on social matters has been diminished slightly with the coming to power of the Labour party in the UK. The treaty agreed at the summit in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in Jun 1997 brought several changes in employment and social policy. However, the new employment chapter contained in the treaty will not have a significant impact on business.
