Star rising for Simpson jury consultant: social science and luck helped Jo-Ellan Dimitrius choose sympathetic panel
Article Abstract:
Demand for Jo-Ellan Dimitrius soared after the OJ Simpson trial, where she helped the defense team select a jury that acquitted Simpson of two murders. A former college professor with a PhD in government and criminology, she relied on voir dire questionnaires and formal and informal surveys. Among her findings was that black women are more neutral than white ones on the issue of domestic violence. Jury consultant Donald Vinson, whose pro bono advice the prosecution declined, said the trial shows the need for his profession.

In the Simpson spotlight: commentators find lots of fame but little fortune from media exposure
Article Abstract:
Some legal commentators on the OJ Simpson trial drew fat paychecks or landed new clients, even new careers, but others say it has been no blessing. Many say they have taken the media work to educate the public, and have even donated any pay to charity. ABC News consultant Leslie Abramson was paid $4000 daily, however, and now hosts her own Fox tv talk show. A few African- American defense lawyers say the work brought in new business. Law professors say it may actually demean their academic reputation.

A rush to reform: critics fear some Simpson-inspired changes are misguided
Article Abstract:
Legal experts are concerned about California's legal reforms inspired by the O.J. Simpson murder and child custody trials. The state bar, judiciary and legislature have proposed changes to rules including juries, hearsay evidence and child custody. One new jury rule, preventing story sales up to half a year after trial, has already been ruled unconstitutional.
