Starr's prominence as business litigator may not be coincidental
Article Abstract:
Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth W. Starr should resign from his government post in view of his continued representation of corporate clients seeking governmental relief on controversial issues. While there is no evidence that this has taken place, appearance counts, and this arrangement gives the executive branch the chance to extend favors to Starr's clients in the hope of leniency. Such an arrangement does not enhance public confidence in the judicial system. Public service and private interests must remain separate.

Corporate beggars seek government handouts
Article Abstract:
Government subsidies to corporations are many and varied, including outright subsidies, loan guarantees, tax breaks, grants and inflated contracts. They belie the often-touted American ideal of make-it-on-your-own capitalism. The link between business and government provided by corporate subsidies also makes the former into a special-interest group with power not accorded ordinary citizens. These subsidies would be better spent on pressing needs such as health care for poor children.

The economic hangover from a binge of greed
Article Abstract:
The recession of the early 1990s is the predictable outcome of the speculative excesses of the 1980s, and it is imperative that people not be allowed to fall through the social safety net while it is going on. Unemployment compensation should be extended for as long as it is needed. The unemployed of the construction industry can be used for much needed repairs of the infrastructure. Adequate federal funds to help distressed cities and states should be made available.
