The controversy in the legal profession regarding proposed changes to the A.B.A.'s Model Rules of Professional Conduct is discussed. Proposed rules broadening the reasons for disclosing client confidences and various changes in ethics rules regarding government attorneys caused the most controversy.

The tentative approval of the revision of the A.B.A. Model Rules of Professional Conduct is discussed, the product of the deliberations of the Ethics 2000 commission. Conflict-of-interest waivers and the disclosure of client confidences are two issues dealt with in the waivers.

Taking a firm hand in discipline; New York ethics rules pinpoint law firms - some say more states should follow

Article Abstract:

New York is the only state with disciplinary rules for law firm conduct, and officials at the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility know of no such rules in other states. The ABA Standing Committee on Professional Discipline is considering amendments to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct, one of which deals with law firm discipline. The New York rules require of law firms the supervision of the work of both lawyers and nonlawyers, as well as the maintenance of an effective system for checking conflicts of interest.
